Jim's 1967 Volkswagen Double Cab Project
This classic Type 2 Crew Cab is here at Vintage Auto for a full restoration and there is plenty to be done!
This truck has received a custom two-tone paint job in original VW colors L53 Sealing Wax Red and L472 Beige Grey,
using PPG Concept (tm) single-stage system. We will be installing full deluxe trim, IRS rear suspension, dropped spindles,
4-wheel disc brakes, and more!

Stereo Install, First Wash, Tune-up & Shakedown
Custom 8-speaker stereo install has been completed, interior and all mechanical details
have been completed as well. Rear bumper will be installed this week, and after a final
shakedown, will be ready to ship! More details coming.

Engine install; Details, Details
TIP: The best way to keep the paint from burning off the rear valance of your
early Type 2 is with common fiberglass header wrap. It's standard equipment on
nearly every race car and really drops the engine temp on a hot air cooled VW.
Below: We just got these beauties back from metal finishing: a set of early 15" OEM Lemmerz beauty rings
will compliment the deluxe trim package as well as they did in the 1950's and 60's!

Suspension And More
Wheels are stock 15" early bus wheels with Michelin Agilis rubber;
Suspension and transaxle were installed this week;
Gary, our upholsterer, handles the custom deluxe interior as Dave installs the vapor barrier;

Assembly detail
The double cab is really starting to come together now that all the parts are in;
Dave takes a break from assembly to bring in Jim's other Volkswagen, a 1973 convertible,
for a new transaxle. Our popular service department is in high gear during summer months.

Suspension kit arrives complete with brakes
Engine assembly is shaping up; more photos to follow. The long-awaited, highly modified "landing gear" arrives,
complete with late model type 2 front disc brakes, Independent Rear Suspension kit, wheel adapters,
and rear discs as well. Custom all the way, and ready to roll!

Still more parts arrive- Interior install begins
Since this 'Cab will be a driver as well as a looker, we've installed a heat booster kit to add to the creature comforts.
Fuel system has been plumbed, and new heavy duty German CV joints have arrived.

This Double Cab is getting deluxe trim!
While not an original option on VW trucks, We are custom adding deluxe aluminum body trim to this one,
and it looks sharp!

Fuel Tank, Wood Slats, More coming soon!
The finer details of this restoration are starting to show as one of our red oak wood slat kits is installed.
The fuel tank and firewall is in place, and the cargo areas are now complete.
The engine parts, transaxle, and suspension will be arriving soon!

Bumpers and Wheels
The bumpers, guards, and wheels receive a coat of primer before being painted L466 Silver Beige.

The front beam gets reconditioned, and door glass is assembled & installed, wheels are sandblasted, and truck
receives fresh undercoat.

Assembly continues
We're going to be having some fun with the suspension!
The transaxle was removed and will be replaced with an IRS version. The front beam will be reconditioned and installed with a set of dropped spindles.
Mild enough to keep a smooth ride, but radical enough for a cool custom look and good handling!

Fitting Wood Slats
We've designed a set of original style wood slats for VW crew-cab beds.
They are made of durable white oak with 6 coats of top quality exterior satin varnish.

Time for high build primers!
Four coats of high build primer were applied, including some added tint for a guide coat. After a bit more curing time
we will block sand this body to perfection before the top coat.
Painting a VW type 2 is no easy task (we do virtually nothing else during paint days),
and requires more than twice the amount of paint and supplies of an average car.
About two gallons of material will be applied to this truck during each stage.

The Steering Gear is sent out for a rebuild

A glimpse of things to come!
All body panels have been pre-fit, straightened, and primed. After a short recess to allow the bodywork to "cure",
(and for the holidays), we will return to this project for some high-build primer and lots of block sanding!

Bodywork phase nearing completion
Spraying on a coat of top quality primer after straightening the panels. All doors, lids, and gates are pre-fit during this stage.

Bodywork begins; Repairs continue
Work is in full swing on this truck; bodywork and metal repairs continue. Back outside for a little sandblast,
lots of cleaning and sanding; all trim, doors, and gates are repaired, primed, ready to go and looking good!
Each will be checked for precise fit before the body is primed.

Metal repairs continue: the front and rear floors are being removed, and the cargo bed is getting a new lease on life.

We've begun to remove the paint to see just how much repair is needed.
From the looks of it, this hard-working truck had a pretty rough life. Time for some TLC!
